Jimmy Kimmel reignited long-running 'feud' with Matt Damon during Oscars

Jimmy Kimmel worked in a dig at his rival Matt Damon during the Oscars

He may have been away from his late-night set, but Jimmy Kimmel didn't leave his long-running feud behind while hosting the Oscars.

While taking on hosting duties at the 95th Academy Awards, Kimmel managed to work in a dig at his long-time 'rival' Matt Damon.

Kimmel and Damon's 'feud' has been the source of many jokes on Jimmy Kimmel Live! over the years.

It was in 2005 that Kimmel first made mention of the Good Will Hunting star, when he joked at the end of the show: "I want to apologise to Matt Damon. We ran out of time."

Since then, this one-liner became a staple on the show, with Kimmel taking time to name-drop Damon at the end of each episode.

During last night's show, he ramped things up a notch while appearing on stage alongside Jessica Chastain.

The 55-year-old comedian quipped: "Was it difficult filming your movie The Martian because your co-star Matt Damon can’t read and smells like dog medicine?"

Laughing, Chastain replied: "I didn’t really have a lot of scenes with him, so it was fine."

Kimmel explained that he initially used Damon's name as an example of an A-lister who would never be dropped from a show's line-up.

Damon, being the good sport he is, managed to get in on the action and appeared in a music video that aired on Kimmel's show in 2008.

The video, titled 'I'm F**king Matt Damon', featured Kimmel's then-girlfriend Sarah Silverman jokingly bragging that she'd bedded her boyfriend's enemy.

Kimmel responded with a video entitled 'I'm F**king Ben Affleck', featuring Damon's longtime collaborator and friend.

The rivalry even received a mention on the 20th-anniversary episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

Kimmel remarked: "I want to apologize to Matt Damon.

"We ran out of time for him, but we’ll definitely try to work him in sometime in the next 20 years."

Upon saying this, the shot cut to Damon sitting in the show's green room, where he was waiting with a cake of Kimmel's face.

The frustrated star hammed it up as he exclaimed: "What the actual f***?

"What the f***? Twenty f****** years of this s***. This is f****** bull****. F*** Kimmel."

Damon wasn't the only Hollywood A-lister who found themselves being mocked by Kimmel during the Oscars ceremony.

Will Smith's infamous Oscar slap received a mention from the host, as he remarked: "We want you to have fun, feel safe and, most importantly, we want me feel safe.

"So, we have strict policies in place. If anyone in this theatre commits an act of violence at any point during the show, you will be awarded the Oscar for best actor and permitted to give a 19-minute long speech.

"But seriously, the Academy has a crisis team in place. If anything unpredictable or violent happens during the show, sit there and do absolutely nothing. Maybe even give the assailant a hug."
