John Mulaney Faces Backlash For Having Dave Chappelle Open Show (Alamy)

John Mulaney is facing criticism after Dave Chappelle opened a show on his From Scratch tour.

This past Friday, 20 May, Chapelle opened for Mulaney at the Ohio State University’s Value City Arena.

While the opening act was supposed to be a surprise for fans, many were left seething from his appearance.

From Scratch is Mulaney's first tour since checking out of rehab and kicked off on March 11.

While fans were looking forward to seeing Mulaney's usual brand of deprecating, quirky humour, they got more than they bargained for when Chappelle showed up.

The surprise caught guests off guard with many taking to Twitter to air their grievances about the 'transphobic comedy' coming from Chappelle.

With one user writing: "god dave chappelle at the columbus john mulaney show was so cringey - made me get second hand embarrassment at his re-used, bland, transphobic comedy that can literally be found in any online comment section from an edgy twelve year old."

Another said: "John Mulaney is dangerous to us for the same reason as Dave Chappelle, he's offered the public a choice between the funny guy they know who makes them laugh, or disposing of trans people as valid beings with an interest in our own humanity."

Netflix Sparks Backlash Announcing New Dave Chappelle Specials

"dave chappelle is so pathetic and john mulaney is so weird for not only inviting him but then essentially co-signing his transphobia and b******* by thanking him for his time being there. what a joke."

"Is it possible at this point for Dave Chappelle to talk about anything other than his thoughts and feelings on trans people."

"Hey @mulaney f*** you for inviting Dave Chappelle, who didn’t even have a cohesive set aside from a couple anti-trans jokes, to open for you."

This isn't the first time Chappelle has made headlines recently, as the comedian was attacked at the Hollywood Bowl in LA on Tuesday, 3 May, while performing as a part of Netflix Is A Joke: The Festival.

The attacker was named as Isaiah Lee by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Despite the disruption, Chappelle stayed on stage and continued his set.

Saying in joke after the incident: "It was a trans man."

The comment comes in reference to ongoing controversy about some of the comedian's jokes which have led to him being accused of transphobia, with his recent set at Mulaney's show being no exception.
