Kim Kardashian And Lizzo Boycott Fourth Of July Following Roe V Wade Ruling

Multiple American celebrities have taken a stand against the fourth of July celebrations following the overturning of the Roe v Wade ruling

Multiple American celebrities have taken a stand against fourth of July celebrations following the overturning of the Roe v Wade ruling.

On 24 June, the Supreme Court stripped millions of women of their legal right to an abortion by voting in favour of the state in the Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organisation case.

Multiple protests have since taken place across the country, from women going on a 'sex strike' to others calling for the US to introduce mandatory chemical castration for all men.

Celebrities such as Skims founder Kim Kardashian and singer Lizzo have also taken to social media to speak out against the celebration of Independence Day (4 July) in light of the Supreme Court's decision.

Earlier today, Kardashian re-shared a post on her Instagram stories which has been widespread across social media.

It reads: "4th of July has been canceled due to a shortage of Independence.

"Sincerely, Women."

American singer-songwriter and rapper Lizzo – formerly name Melissa Viviane Jefferson – has also taken to Instagram to speak out against the ruling.

In the video, Lizzo details how her new shapewear brand Yitty is 'all about body autonomy'.

She continues: "You should be the only one who has a say on how you feel and what you do with your body.

"Celebrate your body's independence with us by giving back to organisations who are fighting on the front line for body autonomy.

"[...] Every damn body has the right to have access to reproductive health resources. I'm 100 percent that b***h and I 100 percent approve this message."

Yitty's website states: "This weekend, July 2-4, YITTY.COM pledges 100 percent of net proceeds to the National Network of Abortion Funds, supporting reproductive freedom and the people on the ground making it happen."

Former fashion model and actor Diane Kruger shared a post to her Instagram story which read: "Not much to celebrate America."

American actor Jessica Chastain also uploaded an image of herself with both middle fingers up at the camera along with the caption: "Happy 'Independence' Day from me and my reproductive rights."

American actor, producer and director Kerry Washington also uploaded a series of posts onto her Instagram stories today.

The first was a post by an account called Abortion Funds that read: "To be truly free, we need to end police violence, white supremacy, criminalisation of bodily autonomy, wealth and power hoarding, economic exploitation, transphobic, the war on drugs, housing and educational inequalities."

The second post was a quote from President and Director Counsel Emeritus NAACP Legal Defence Fund, Inc, Sherrilyn Ifill.

"Remember that we have never seen the America we've been fighting for. Right on the other side of this unraveling is opportunity. If we keep fighting no matter what, take care of ourselves and each other, stay strategic and principled, and use all our power," Ifill said.

The third share on Washington's story was a quote from a book by American journalist Isabel Wilkerson called Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.

"July 4 2022. The day that the United States will have been a free and independent nation for as long as slavery lasted on its soil," the post read.

The actor concluded the series by posting the same image as Kardashian.
