Meat Loaf Once Tried To Push Prince Andrew Into A Moat

Singer and actor Meat Loaf, real name Marvin Lee Aday, has died aged 74; he was surrounded by his family at the time.

In his long-running career he sold more than 80 million records and starred in iconic movies such as Fight Club, Wayne's World and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

One of the lesser known highlights of his career, however, has got to be his appearance on It's A Royal Knockout, where he tried to push Prince Andrew into a moat. Although, in his defence, the royal tried to push him in first.

According to The Independent, it was Prince Edward's idea to stage the one-off charity event, which was held on the Alton Towers lawn in 1987 and shown to the nation on BBC One.

The teams were led by Prince Edward, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, each one representing a different charity and packed with celebrities and athletes.

Celebrities taking part alongside Meat Loaf included Gary Lineker, Tom Jones, John Cleese and Christopher Reeve.

None of the royals actually competed in any of the events, instead functioning as team captains, and the programme raised more than £1 million for charity. The Queen reportedly did not approve of the show.

The altercation between Meat Loaf and Prince Andrew apparently occurred after the singer got friendly with his team captain, to the anger of her husband.

Meat Loaf first spoke of the incident in a 2003 interview with The Guardian, where he joked that the Queen 'hates me'.

He said: 'Fergie wasn't exactly flirting with me, but she was paying attention to me, and I think Andrew got a little – I could be wrong, I'm just reading into this – I think he got a little jealous.

'Anyway, he tried to push me in the water. He tried to push me in the moat. So I turned around and I grabbed him and he goes, 'You can't touch me. I'm royal.' I said, 'well you try to push me in the moat, Jack, I don't give a sh*t who you are, you're goin' in the moat'.'

As for It's A Royal Knockout, Meat Loaf's team came in last place and Princess Anne's team won the day.

Since the iconic rock star's death, more anecdotes about his life have resurfaced, such as what he really meant when he sang 'I would do anything for love, but I won't do that.'
