People think Robert Downey Jr is going to slap Jimmy Kimmel after awkward Oscars joke

Jimmy Kimmel made a reference to Robert Downey Jr.'s addiction struggle addiction in his Oscars opening speech

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel's opening speech has left some people wondering if Robert Downey Jr. was about to get up and slap him.

The comedian took to the stage to open the ceremony for the Oscars, and made some references to Robert Downey Jr.'s previous struggles with addiction.

Kimmel quipped: "This is the highest point of Robert Downey Jr's long and illustrious career. Well, one of the highest points."

Kimmel didn't stop there either, as Downey Jr. pointed to his face in his seat as RDJ touched his nose.

Kimmel added: "Was that too on the nose or a drug motion you made?"

He then rowed things back a little, highlighting Downey Jr.'s many awards.

Kimmel said: "But look at him, he's so handsome, so talented, he's won every award there is to win.

"Is that an acceptance speech in your pocket or do you just have a very rectangular penis?"

It's fair to say the actor looked less than impressed with the jokes, and with Will Smith's slapping Chris Rock still in people's minds, people were all thinking the same thing.

People took to social media to share their thoughts on the awkward exchange, which saw Downey Jr. giving Kimmel a look that could curdle milk.

One wrote: "I had higher hopes for Jimmy Kimmel...and then the Robert Downey Jr. 'Jokes' hit...and did not land."

Another wrote: "2024 and Jimmy Kimmel bringing Robert Downey Jr. addiction during his opening monologue and trying to make a joke about it. So unnecessary… WTF."

A third posted: "Jimmy Kimmel made a drug comment regarding Robert Downey, Jr. and he stayed in his seat."

Downey Jr. has received a nomination for the Best Supporting Actor in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.

This is the second time he has been nominated in this category, with the other being for his role in Tropic Thunder.

Christopher Nolan’s historical drama follows the life of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb.
