Sydney Sweeney has addressed her mom’s controversial party last summer, saying there were ‘so many misinterpretations’ of the event.
In August last year, the family hosted a 60th birthday party for Sweeney’s mother, with guests dressed in cowboy hats and denim for an all-American hoedown theme.
However, photos also showed a number of people wearing what appeared to be ‘Blue Lives Matter’ t-shirts and MAGA-style caps - the latter of which turned out to say ‘Make Sixty Great Again’.
After people slammed the family’s alleged political ties, Sweeney shared a statement on Twitter calling on people to stop ‘making assumptions’.

The Euphoria and White Lotus star wrote: “You guys this is wild. An innocent celebration for my mom’s milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention.
“Please stop making assumptions. Much love to everyone and Happy Birthday Mom!"
Many in the comments remained unconvinced, with one person writing: "It's literally a political statement. MAGAts are gonna MAGA.
"You support a treasonous traitor! Guilty by association."

Another wrote: "So NONE of you guys have conservative parents or family members? Ok lol."
A third said wrote: "Then you should've selected other pictures to post that wouldn't be left up to interpretation in this manner. Lesson learned for you, I 'assume'."
Almost one year on, Sweeney has now spoken out about the online backlash to the party.

In a new interview with Variety, she discussed the benefits and disadvantages of fame for her family - explaining how most of her relatives had never been on a plane before, but now she brings her cousins to set ‘to help them grow and open their minds’.
“That is what I love doing now,” 25-year-old Sweeney said.
The downside, of course, is when family become involved in negative press, with the actor mentioning ‘the birthday party’, which her father wasn’t present for.
“There were so many misinterpretations,” the actor continued.

“The people in the pictures weren’t even my family. The people who brought the things that people were upset about were actually my mom’s friends from L.A. who have kids that are walking outside in the Pride parade, and they thought it would be funny to wear because they were coming to Idaho.”
Sweeney added: “People are so fast to build someone up, and then they love tearing them down.
“And it’s so fascinating to see. Three years ago, I was going to college just like everybody else. And all of a sudden, I’m not a human anymore.”
