Sarah Michelle Gellar calls out Howard Stern for comments on Freddie Prinze Jr. marriage 20 years ago

The actor brought up the radio host's comment about her and husband Freddie Prinze Jr's marriage 'not lasting ten years'

Sarah Michelle Gellar made a dig at Howard Stern when she celebrated her and husband Freddie Prinze Jr’s 20th wedding anniversary on Thursday (1 September).

The Hollywood couple both took to their respective Instagram pages to mark the milestone with some loved-up snaps, and Gellar also posted footage grabs of Prinze’s 2001 interview with Stern, where the radio host flippantly remarked that the couple’s marriage wouldn’t last ten years. Watch the interview below:

Back in the early noughties, Stern had told Prinze Jr: “So you will marry Sarah Michelle Gellar even though you know that it won't last."

He replied, "Absolutely it will last," to which Stern remarked: "I wanna make a written bet with you. In about 10 years you're gonna hunt me down and go, 'Howard, I owe you money’.”

Referring to the fact Stern had made a financial bet with her husband, Gellar quipped: “What do you think?!?! I think you owe us."

The actor reposted his wife’s story this week, adding the caption: “She will never forget," alongside two laughing face emojis.

Gellar and Prinze Jr tied the knot in Mexico in 2002. They had met on the 1997 set of cult classic, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and confirmed their romance three years later.

They quickly became engaged and now share kids Charlotte Grace, 12, and Rocky James, 10.

Revealing how they became friends on the IKWYDLS set, Prinze Jr told US Weekly a couple of years ago: “She didn’t have a driver’s licence. She didn’t know how to drive. And we were shooting in Southport, North Carolina, which was an hour’s drive from the nearest Wilmington, which was the biggest city that was closest to us.

“It was an hour drive just to get to the gym. And when we transported the film down to South Park, she had no way to get up there.”

He added: “So, I started driving her, and that’s when her and I became friends. And we just would talk about life and stuff like that, and we had completely different philosophies on just about everything.

“Cause she was a born and raised New Yorker and I was a born and raised L.A. kid, and we just looked at everything like night and day.”

The couple sat down together with ET back in 2020 to talk about their decades-strong romance, and revealed one of the secrets to their successful relationship is the fact they don’t share a bathroom.

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer star quipped: "That's my best advice. Don't share a bathroom."

"If they stop making you laugh, then your days are numbered," added Prinze Jr.
