Man uncovers 50-year-old family secret after discovering his name has been wrong his whole life

The anonymous man took to Reddit to explain how he has been spelling his name wrong his whole life.

A man was left in utter shock after discovering a 50-year-old family secret at his grandfather's funeral.

The remarkable story has recently resurfaced after it was posted on Reddit some eight years ago and it's still shocking the internet to this day.

In a post on the 'Dear Reddit, Today, I F***ed Up' forum, the anonymous man explained how he discovered at the age of 29 that he had been spelling his last name completely wrong his entire life.

Up until the sad day of his grandfather's funeral, the man had been spelling his surname as 'DeLucio'.

But when he was looking through the list of his late grandfather's grandchildren's names, he noticed that the surnames were actually spelt differently.

"The names looked fine, except for the fact that our last name is actually spelled with a capital L," the man penned in the Reddit post.

"I gave a lighthearted, 'Well, I mean it's WAY off, they forgot the Capital L'."

The man then got a 'confused' look by his uncle, which led to the near 50-year secret being exposed.

All these years, the man's last name was actually spelt Delucio.

He wrote that his family didn't seem too bothered by the 'error', though he had always thought the 'I' was meant to be capitalized.

But his uncle insisted that the surname had always been spelt Delucio, which led to a bit of a disagreement.

The 29-year-old told his uncle: "I'm pretty sure I know how to spell my own last name.

"You don't share our last name but I assure you, it's a capital."

All this obviously happened while the whole family were grieving - with the man adding that his father then started to act 'strange' during the debate on how to spell their surname.

Eventually, the man said that his father came out and admitted to changing the spelling from Delucio to DeLucio.

"He said that our name was actually Delucio, but that when he was in 3rd or 4th grade he decided he wanted to look cool, and capitalized the 'l' on his own," the man said.

"He never got caught, legal agencies apparently didn't notice/care, and the name stuck.

"I've been living my father's lie for 30 years."

And many have since flocked to the comments section of the Reddit post with some hilarious responses.

"'Look on the bright side, now you sound like a mob boss with that last name," one user wrote.

While a second added: "At least you didn't find out your name is actually Delicio, then you'd be a pizza."
