The father of murdered toddler James Bulger is calling for a recent picture of his son’s killer to be made public.
51-year-old Ralph Bulger, has stated how he wants Jon Venables to be stripped of his anonymity.
Bulger’s comments come after Venables was found to have child-abuse images on his computer and subsequently jailed.
Mr Bulger says Venables, who is now 35-years-old, should be given an adult life sentence for his part in the horrific murder of his two-year-old son James 24 years ago.
An understandably furious Ralph slammed the decision to spend £5 million on the rehabilitation and protection of Venables’ true identity, along with his co-killer, Robert Thompson.
Speaking to The Sunday People, as reported by the Mirror, Mr Bulger said:
If people saw a photo of him as the adult monster he truly is, they would have a very different perception of the person committing the crimes instead of a picture of so called childhood innocence.
The father added how efforts by the authorities to rehabilitate Venables had failed – because of his re-offending – and therefore, he should be stripped of his anonymity.
He also made the point, why should his son’s killer be treated differently to other child murderers.
Venables, along with his friend at the time, Robert Thompson, were ten-years-old when they killed two-year-old James in 1993.
The pair abducted James from a shopping centre in Bootle, Liverpool, before leading him along a canal and down a towpath where they then tortured him.
In the sickening act, the ten-year-old boys battered James with an iron bar and poured paint into his eyes.
They also stoned him and hit him with bricks before abandoning him on a railway line to be hit a train.
Venables and Thompson were jailed, but were subsequently released with new identities after serving eight years.
During the eight years the pair spent jailed, not a single day of it was in an adult prison.
Disturbingly, in 2010, a 32-year-old Venables was back in prison for breaking the conditions of his release – he had downloaded and distributed more than 100 images of child abuse.
Venables is now back behind bars after more images with discovered on his computer.
Ralph Bulger continued:
You only have to look at the manner in which they tortured my son before killing him to know this is true, but no one wanted to hear it or believe it because Thompson and Venables were just ten. Now they’re not.
In light of Venables’ recent offence, Ralph has warned justice chiefs, they must look again at James’ murder case and admit the motivation was sexual.
He criticised the Ministry of Justice for failing to inform him Venables had been recalled to prison.
Ralph Bulger was married to James’ mother Denise, but is now settled with his current partner, Natalie McDermott – the pair welcomed a baby daughter together in 2013.
Mr Bulger has always expressed his sadness at the thought of his daughter never knowing her big brother James:
I will always be tinged with sadness because James is missing from our family, but I will tell my girl all about him as she grows up.
February 12, 2018 will mark 25 years since the death of James Bulger.
