A young man has died after he was chased and knocked to the floor by police inside a shop in east London.

Rashan Charles, 20, died following the incident at Yours Locally, in Dalston, Hackney, in the early hours of Saturday morning – sparking an independent investigation.

According to The Independent, Charles was chased by a Metropolitan Police officer after policemen attempted to stop a car on Kingsland Road at 1:45am.

Charles ran into a nearby shop where he was seen ‘trying to swallow an object’ and was grabbed by the officer who tried to take him outside. After a brief struggle Charles was tackled to the ground by the officer.

According to a statement released by Scotland Yard, Charles quickly became ill and received treatment from a police officer, police medic and paramedics before being taken to Royal London Hospital where he died.

Evidence obtained by the IPCC suggests an object was removed from Charles’ throat at the scene.

A spokesman from the Metropolitan Police said:

The man entered a shop in Kingsland Road, where he was seen to be trying to swallow an object. The officer intervened and sought to prevent the man from harming himself, but he was then taken ill.
