Disgraced Olympic athlete, Oscar Pistorius has today had his murder sentence more than doubled.

A South African appeals court increased the Pistorious’ prison time from six years to 13 years and 5 months, according to the BBC, after prosecutors argued the initial sentence was too short.

The South African paralympian, 31, shot his then 29-year-old girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013 when he fired four times through the door of his bedroom toilet.

He pleaded not guilty at his trial in 2014 and has always denied killing Steenkamp, a South African model, in a rage, saying he mistook her for a burglar.

Justice Lorimer Leach previously said, by arming himself and firing at the door, Pistorius must have known whoever was behind the door, would likely die.

The athlete’s lawyers have always maintained he believed there was an intruder, but the judge said the identity of the person he shot at was irrelevant.

Pistorius’ original manslaughter sentence was overturned.

The highly-publicised case has been the subject of much forensic debate and controversy, with forensic expert brothers, Calvin and Thomas Mollett, claiming Pistorius attacked Steenkamp with a cricket bat before he shot her dead.

In a book entitled Oscar vs The Truth, the brothers carry out an independent analysis of the evidence given in trial, drawing attention to two wounds on the model’s back.
