A couple hired a photographer to document the birth of their ‘new baby’…which was in fact, a cat.
Lucy Schultz and her boyfriend released photos showing the emotional journey they went through to ‘give birth’ to their new cat.
Lucy posted the family photos to Facebook with the caption:
On 1/10/18 we welcome our first baby kitten, a neutered male DLH. He is 22″ long and weighed 6 pounds 7 oz.
He is already eating solid food. Name to be announced. We are so in love.
The male feline was actually adopted from Soul Dog in Colorado and Lucy, being a certified ‘cat person’, was just very excited to share her new family member with the world.
Speaking to UNILAD, the woman behind the camera, Elizabeth Woods-Darby said:
It was a blast to photograph. All three of us were laughing the whole time. It was a pretty quick shoot, but one of the funnest I’ve done in a while.
The kitten slept through most of it and what he didn’t, he purred for the rest of. He especially adored being wrapped up in his new born baby blanket and still loves it.
Elizabeth explained how the pair had received a backlash for the shoot:
I guess I’d say it’s gone viral because it’s funny and a little weird and also because it’s realistic in a way.
I think a lot of people around a certain age, all our newsfeeds and stories are about everyone having kids.
This piece wasn’t to mock that, not at all, but to celebrate the occasion of adopting a new part of the family, especially one that didn’t have a home a week ago.
We’ve gotten a lot of hate on us, folks saying that we’re disrespecting women and mothers, but it’s actually the opposite.
Both Lucy and I are photographers (I specialise in videography) and have shot births and newborns and I think it’s our shared delight and respect for that event that helped us craft these images in such a realistic way.
In an interview with 9NEWS, Lucy said the biggest thing she wanted people to take away from the viral photo series is to go out and adopt kittens.
Elizabeth said she loves being the ‘cat birth’ photographer:
It’s hilarious that I’m now known as the #catbirth photographer, the only thing that used to come up on google were the articles about me winning best actress, so I guess you could say it’s a bit of a change, but you roll with the times, right?
It’s brought a lot of joy to folks and elevated the cause of adopting rescue kitties, which are both good things in the world and I’m always happy to have my name associated with that joy for folks.
The kitten still has no name, but thoroughly enjoyed its welcome into the Schultz household.
Schultz’s dream is to one day own a cat sanctuary and to find her newest addition plenty of friends.
