For nearly six seasons Schmidt has captured the hearts and minds of New Girl viewers with only one name.
Following in the footsteps of his fellow greats – Prince, Ghandi, Cher, Seal – Max Green has portrayed a man so powerful he only needed a singular syllable to be surmised in a simple exhalation of breath: Schmidt.
Last night, with the airing of the episode titled San Diego, that all changed.
Meet Winston Schmidt… First name, Winston. Second name, Schmidt.
Confused by character deja vu? That’s understandable, considering Schmidt and Nick’s lovable housemate is also called Winston.
While it might look like laziness on the part of writers Dave Finkel and Brett Baer, in fact, the writers had been contemplating the big name unveiling since day, as Schmidt himself would say.
“It was much more Hebraic,” Finkel said of the original name, adding: “In the end, Schmidt is Schmidt.”
Explaining why it’s taken so long to unite Schmidt with Winston, Baer said:
We just decided that it was not the right time, and that it was too soon, and that we were shooting ourselves in the foot, comedy-wise.
We obviously wanted to hold our fire for as long as we possibly could. But there was a ticking clock element, as well.
Referencing that worrisome fact that Fox have yet to commission a seventh season of the show, Baer added:
We also didn’t know if this was the end of the road, so we wanted to finally do it.
At least, if New Girl is discontinued, Schmit will be able to unveil all his newly monogrammed seletion of bath robes and smoking jackets before the end is upon us.
