First look at Carrie Fisher’s final movie Wonderwell, being released years after her death

The final film Carrie Fisher made is being released years after she died

The first look at Wonderwell, the final movie acting icon Carrie Fisher appeared in, has been revealed ahead of the film's release.

Fisher died aged 60 on 27 December, 2016, though she appeared posthumously in several projects she had completed before her death.

Now, the final film she worked on which has yet to be seen is due to be released and it will be the final role in her long and distinguished career.

Deadline reports that Fisher died six weeks after finishing her work on Wonderwell, with the film finally set to receive a limited cinematic release in the US before a digital release later this month.

It's the directorial debut of Vlad Marsavin, who said it was the 'perfect time to share her magical on screen moments' as the character of Hazel in the movie.

The director told Deadline that the film's seven year delay was due to difficulty getting the visual effects right after they'd wrapped on shooting, causing the budget to increase and take more time.

Wonderwell will be dedicated to Carrie Fisher's memory and Marsavin explained the impact that her death had had on the movie's cast and crew.

He said: "Carrie was full of energy during filming and even celebrated her 60th birthday with us in Italy where we shot the movie.

"After a night shoot, which went on until 2am, she invited the whole team to celebrate with her and the party ended up being shut down by the police because it was deemed a little too loud."

"Her passing was very emotional for the whole team."

Wonderwell is a coming-of-age fantasy movie set in Italy following the adventures of a 12-year-old girl named Violet (Kiera Milward), while Fisher has top billing in the cast in her role as Hazel.

Fisher played 'extravagant and powerful witch of the forest' Hazel.

Earlier this year, Fisher received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with her daughter Billie Lourd accepting the honour in her mother's name.

Fisher's Star Wars co-star Mark Hamill also attended the event and gave a speech paying tribute to her memory and the impact she had on his life.

He said: "She played such a crucial role in my professional and personal life, and both would have been far emptier without her.

"Was she a handful? Was she high-maintenance? Oh-ho-ho no doubt, but everything would have been so much drabber and less interesting if she hadn't been the friend that she was."

Wonderwell releases on 23 June.
