Daniel Radcliffe To Play ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic In Biopic
Daniel Radcliffe will play ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic in a biopic chronicling the Grammy-winner’s life and fame.
Radcliffe is most-known for his performance as ‘The Boy Who Lived’ in the Harry Potter franchise. However, likely in a bid to make more of his acting legacy, his post-Hogwarts career has been spectacularly strange: in Horns, he played a man with supernatural abilities; in Swiss Army Man, he played a farting corpse; and in Guns Akimbo, he played a game developer in a real-life deathmatch.
He recently reunited with his wizarding pals to mark the 20th anniversary of The Philosopher’s Stone. Now, he’ll try to capture the magic of the best-selling comedy singer of all time: ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic.
Weird Al, real name Alfred Matthew Yankovic, is the master purveyor of song parodies, including but not limited to: Eat It, based on Michael Jackson’s Beat It; Another One Rides The Bus, based on Queen’s Another One Bites The Dust; Smells Like Nirvana, based on Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit; and White and Nerdy, based on Chamillionaire’s Ridin’.
Radcliffe will star as the titular musician in WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story, written by Yankovic and Eric Appel, and directed by the latter.
‘When my last movie UHF came out in 1989, I made a solemn vow to my fans that I would release a major motion picture every 33 years, like clockwork. I’m very happy to say we’re on schedule. And I am absolutely thrilled that Daniel Radcliffe will be portraying me in the film. I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the role future generations will remember him for,’ Yankovic said, as per The Wrap.
‘The biopic holds nothing back, exploring every facet of Yankovic’s life, from his meteoric rise to fame with early hits like Eat It and Like a Surgeon to his torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle,’ the official synopsis reads.
‘WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story takes audiences on a truly unbelievable journey through Yankovic’s life and career, from gifted child prodigy to the greatest musical legend of all time.’
If you’re wondering what made Radcliffe decide to take on Weird Al, it’s quite simple: he can do whatever he wants. ‘I’ve actually found it’s an incredibly liberating thing to do the biggest thing you’re ever going to do really f*cking early,’ he earlier told Empire.
‘The financial success thing, that’s done. So just do things that make you happy… like, for every director out there that was like, ‘I can only see him as Harry Potter’, there was at least one that said, ‘I wonder if he’ll do this really f*cking weird thing?’ And I did!’
