If I told you a load of celebrities were going round filming themselves kicking the caps off bottles, I could probably predict your reactions.
‘Surely not,’ you’d no doubt mutter to yourselves. ‘Hollywood A-Listers don’t have time in their busy schedules to be getting involved in that kind of carry on’.
Before this year, you might have been right. Before even last month, you would’ve had a fighting chance at winning this very debate. But alas, 2019 is the time of the bottle cap challenge, so you’re very much mistaken.
The latest celebrity to get involved in the challenge? Donnie Yen:

Chirrut feeling the force + Ip man’s steady aim + no plastic bottle = the universe strongest 😆 #bottlecapchallenge @sweetcil #donnieyen #甄子丹 #宇宙最強 #ipman #action #宇宙最強甄子丹 #chirrutimwe #starwars #rogueone #noplasticbottle #torontoraptors #nbachampions #raptors #bulletfilms #superbulletpictures @bulletfilmsofficial @superbulletpictures
Would you just look at that – the finesse, the technique, the pure confidence he has as he kicks his foot in the direction of the unsuspecting bottle.
The Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star posted the video of him attempting (and completing) the bottle cap challenge earlier today (July 3). Yen upped the ante though, doing the entire thing blindfolded and hands-down beating his predecessors who dared come before him.
If you’ve somehow managed to miss the challenge in all its glory, it’s relatively self-explanatory in the fact that it involves a person removing the cap from a bottle with one well-placed kick. The catch? Said person can’t touch or move the bottle.
Before Yen came Jason Statham, Conor McGregor, John Mayer, and MMA fighter Max Holloway (to name just a few) – all of whom probably thought they’d done a pretty decent job at completing the challenge and maintaining their badass reputations.
That is, until the Star Wars actor came along and blew everyone else’s attempts out of the water. Sorry guys, a fact is a fact.
The origins of the viral challenge aren’t exactly known, although Max Holloway seems to be one of the first to get involved over the weekend when he uploaded an impressive clip of him kicking the bottle cap clean off.
Sharing the video on Instagram, the UFC featherweight champion wrote:
Be curious my friends! #challengeaccepted #bottlecapchallenge Passing this on to our guy @johnmayer …. hey John if you can’t complete this challenge @erlsn.acr and I decided you have to come to Hawaii after your tour and kick it with us until you complete it!
From there, everyone seemed to get in on the action, leaving no stone (bottle cap) unturned (unkicked).
Who knows, maybe I’ll even give it a go? Or maybe not, if I want to stay out of hospital for the foreseeable future…
