First Trailer For Ms. Marvel Has Dropped

Ms. Marvel, a new Disney+ series starring the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first Muslim superhero, just got its first trailer.

Ms. Marvel, a new Disney+ series starring the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first Muslim superhero, just got its first trailer.

Newcomer Iman Vellani will play Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teen based in New Jersey, who became the company’s first Muslim hero to headline her own comic book back when she debuted in 2014. It's her first major on-screen performance, and she's set to play a major role in the franchise going forward.

The Ms. Marvel series was originally announced during 2019's D23 Expo, alongside the likes of Hawkeye, Moon Knight and She-Hulk as part of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Bisha K. Ali as showrunner and Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah taking on a couple of episodes.

Little has been known about the exact plot of the show, but it's expected to follow Khan – a huge fan of Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) – as she discovers her own powers after being hit with a mysterious burst of energy.

As for her powers, the character has the ability to stretch her limbs in incredible ways – at least, she does in the comics. In past promotional art, it seems the show will ditch this for energy-based powers of some kind, while still keeping certain moves.

Earlier discussing how it felt to be cast, Vellani told Variety, 'The fact that the show is being made and they're including this character in the MCU is [what's important].

'I don't really have to go out of my way and talk about being a Muslim and being Pakistani – it all comes out in the show. People seeing a person like me involved in a project as big as this is, I think, inspiring enough.'

Last year, Marvel chief Kevin Feige confirmed it'll also set up The Marvels, the Captain Marvel sequel set for release in 2023.

In an interview with Uproxx, Larson teased the 'bonkers' follow-up.

'I wish I could talk about it. I can talk about my feelings around it. I can say that... I can’t say enough about how incredible our director, Nia DaCosta, is and what an honour it was to work with her, what an immense talent she is, how much I just feel like she’s the future,' she said.

'And I could also say that, when I read the script for the first time, I couldn’t believe what I was reading. I was like, this is bonkers. And it’s the thing that I love about Marvel, is that they continue to reinvent.

'They continue to do the thing that you just would never think would be possible in these films. And they’re not afraid to go there.'

Ms. Marvel starts streaming June 8 on Disney+.
