Gilbert Gottfried's Last Social Post Was To Defend Chris Rock

The legendary comic passed away following a 'long illness'

Gilbert Gottfried's final social media post was to defend Chris Rock.

The legendary comic's family confirmed yesterday (12 April) that he had passed away.

But just a couple of weeks ago, the 67-year-old shared a photo of him with Rock, in a show of solidarity following the events during the Oscars ceremony on Sunday 27 March.

While presenting an award, the comedian had made a joke about Will Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who has alopecia.

Angered by the comments, Smith shocked the star-studded audience when he stormed the stage and slapped Rock across the face.

Smith later went on to win the Best Actor Oscar that night, but has since quit The Academy and been banned from attending the Oscars for ten years.

Following the incident, Gottfried posted a pic of Rock to Instagram and Twitter, with the caption: "Which is the worst crime?

"Chris Rock being physically assaulted or Chris Rock telling a joke?"

News of Gottfried's passing was confirmed by his family, who said the actor had died following a 'long illness'.

It read: "We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness.

"In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children.

"Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor."

Gottfried was perhaps best known for his work on Saturday Night Live and lending his voice to Iago the parrot in Disney's Aladdin.

And following news of his death, friends and admirers took to social media to share tributes and to offer their condolences with Gottfried's family.

Seinfeld star Jason Alexander wrote: "Gilbert Gottfried made me laugh at times when laughter did not come easily. What a gift.

"I did not know him well but I loved what he shared with me. My best wishes and sympathy to his family."

Seth MacFarlane, of Family Guy, said: "Gilbert Gottfried made me laugh so hard that day on set, I could barely do my job. A wholly original comic, and an equally kind and humble guy behind the scenes. He will be missed."

Comedian Jon Stewart wrote: "RIP Gilbert. Opening for Gilbert Gottfried at Carolines and Princeton Catch was one of the great thrills of my early stand up life. He could leave you gasping for breath…just indescribably unusually hilarious…Damn."
