Why Won’t Hollywood Cast Jim Carrey Anymore?
The man who can make the most annoying sound in the world, have a brawl…with himself, do a faultless Clint Eastwood Impression, and make me cry with extreme happiness and sadness in the same film, has been thrown to one side by Hollywood honchos.
Even the coldest of hearts can be warmed by Jim Carrey’s energetic slapstick and outrageously ingenious silliness on screen.
It was a joy to see him return for Dumb and Dumber 2, even if I did romanticize it out of longing to see Lloyd Christmas again.
Looper have reported that a key reason we haven’t seen much of Jim Carrey is the box office confusion surrounding him.
There was a time that Jim Carrey’s films were guaranteed box office smashers, but for some reason, even his critically acclaimed films, like I Love You Phillip Morris, released more recently haven’t pulled in enough cash.
Despite the Dumber and Dumber sequel doing really well at the box office, earning about $130 million over its budget, critics were not kind.
Even though his talents are undoubtable, with the ability to alter his performance for physical comedy or surreal dramas, it is a business at the end of the day, and it seems the bosses are prioritising a more reliable income stream.
Then comes the issue of not winning enough awards. HE HASN’T WON ANY AWARD BECAUSE YOU STOPPED CASTING HIM IN GOOD FILMS…Sorry did I say that out loud?
As I ponder on this subject, I can’t help but wonder, how hasn’t this man got an Oscar? Dumb and Dumber, Bruce Almighty, Truman Show, Me Myself and Irene, Liar Liar, The Mask, Eternal Sunshine, The Grinch, The Man on the Moon…Come on!
Though he didn’t get his third Golden Globe, Carrey had the whole theatre roaring with laughter when he put it into perspective…
Carrey has also had very vocal opinions on vaccines and has openly campaigned against them.
Such open views on the ‘poison’ could alienate parts of the audience, so studios could be reluctant to take on this sort of risk.
As of late, Carrey has been involved in other controversy surrounding his ex-girlfriend Catriona White who died of an intentional drug overdose in 2015.
White’s family have made accusation against Jim that he allegedly gave their daughter sexually transmitted diseases, lied to her, and gave her the drug she overdosed on.
Carrey has responded to these claims, saying:
I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved.
If these claims are true, they are undeniable terrible actions, but should they affect his acting career before they have even been proven?
Of course it’s a tough ‘biz’ to be in, but Hollywood is losing one of its most versatile and joyous actors.
Regardless of how many shiny awards the industry’s elite have chosen to give him, the guy has made so many people laugh until they pee…what better recognition is there?
I think the demand for his energy on screen will never falter.
Jim, I’m telling you there’s a chance.
