Star Wars cult favourite character Boba Fett has had his iconic ship renamed to remove any racist connotations.

In June last year, Lego confirmed they had been asked to drop the original name of ‘Slave 1’ from all Boba Fett merchandise by Disney, who own the rights to Star Wars.

The move came mere months before the new series The Book of Boba Fett premiered, with many believing the decision stemmed from the brand wanting to move away from any possible racist connotations of the word ‘slave.’

Now, Temuera Morrison, who plays the lead role in the new Disney+ series, has revealed the ship’s updated name.

Speaking to The Wrap, the actor was asked to confirm what the iconic vessel would be called moving forward.

He said: ‘I think we call it The Firespray, I think I’ve mentioned it in a couple of episodes … It’s a gunship now. That’s what we’re calling it. Firespray gunship.’

Morrison and co-star Ming-Na Wen, who plays the master assassin Fennec Shand, were brought together in The Mandalorian season 2.

The spinoff series sees the two embarking on thrilling adventures in the galaxy’s criminal underworld when they return to the sands of Tatooine to stake their claim on the territory once ruled by Jabba the Hutt and his crime syndicate.

Many fans were left outraged when news of the renaming was announced, with previous Boba Fett actors Daniel Logan and Mark Anthony Austin sharing their disdain.

In February 2021, The Mandalorian star Gina Carano was fired from the show after sharing a post on social media implying that being a Republican today is like being Jewish during the Holocaust.

Following the post, a Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement: ‘Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future.

‘Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.’

While the ‘Slave 1’ name is not explicitly linked to the history of slavery in the US, Disney is one of a number of companies to have re-examined the potentially racist connotations of their products.

In 2017, the company retired all merchandise of Princess Leia in her iconic gold bikini outfit and chains after a fan campaign claimed the depiction was sexist and objectifying.
