Jesse Plemons Claims Benedict Cumberbatch ‘P*****’ Him Off Over ‘Big Boy’ Comment
Jesse Plemons has revealed how Benedict Cumberbatch ‘got under his skin’ on the set of The Power of the Dog.
Netflix’s acclaimed western, directed by Jane Campion, stars the pair as ranch-owning brothers in 1925 Montana. George (Plemons) is quiet, kind-hearted and a bit lonely, finding solace in the affection of Rose (Kirsten Dunst), a local inn owner and widow.
Phil (Cumberbatch), inspired by his former mentor ‘Bronco Henry’, isn’t the nicest chap. He’s volatile and often cruel to those around him, met with laughs from some and tears from others.
The Doctor Strange star stayed in character between takes, which led to the occasional frosty moment. For example, in a recent interview with Variety, Plemons recounted one instance where Cumberbatch accidentally took things too far.
‘There was one time he got under my skin. He was like, ‘Hey, big boy.’ It wasn’t ‘fatso’. I feel like a few people in life have been like, ‘Hey, big boy,’ and I was like, ‘Goddamn it. What the f*ck’,’ he said, admitting it ‘pissed him off’. Cumberbatch quickly apologised, and Plemons laughed it off.
‘Everyone was on the same page. I was introduced to the crews as ‘Phil’. Jane would say, ‘This is Phil. You’re going to be working with Phil. Benedict is really nice but you’re going to me meet him at the end of the shoot’,’ Cumberbatch explained.
‘That just gave me permission to commit to this character whose behaviour is at times repugnant, and not feel apologetic or embarrassed or self conscious about it in any way.’
It echoes past interviews about the film, with Cumberbatch discussing how he and Dunst refused to speak to each other, given their dislike for one another in the movie.
‘I didn’t want to be really mean to Kirsten, but I needed to stay in character. So I didn’t speak to her on-set. She was the same. We were the negative to each other’s positive. [We were] repelled by each other,’ he said.
‘I isolated myself from Benedict, we didn’t talk at all during the filming unless we were out to dinner on a weekend, all together, or playing with our kids,’ Dunst also said.
The Power of the Dog is expected to be a major player at this year’s Oscars, with Cumberbatch predicted to nab a Best Actor nomination. It’s available to stream on Netflix now.
