Jim Carrey Shares The Film Role He Said Yes To The Quickest

Jim Carrey has revealed the role he agreed to play the fastest.

The 60-year-old actor has starred in some iconic roles. From the Grinch to Stanley Ipkiss in The Mask (1994) and even Doctor Robotnik in upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey has performed in an array of strange, sometimes very green, but always impressive characters.

However, while fans may have their own favourites, Carrey has since spoken out about the role which he agreed to take on the quickest.

Carrey revealed the role he said yes to the fastest was the character of insurance salesman Truman Burbank in The Truman Show (1998).

In the psychological comedy drama, Truman goes about his day-to-day life not realising he is actually taking part in a sort of reality show where he is viewed by millions.

The actor told Screen Rant: "The Truman Show. First of all, I had thought of that concept two years before. I had noodled with it, but I couldn't break the code.

"And then when I was handed that script, Andrew Nichols' script, I read it and knew probably within 10 pages that I had to do the movie. It was not a question."

However, Carrey also said another script immediately took his fancy.

He explained: "Eternal Sunshine [of The Spotless Mind] was like that as well. Comedies are generally things that you have to consider. You don't generally get a very well-formed comedy; at least I don't. It's like making a silk purse out of a sow's ear a little bit.

"You've really got to work a comedy to keep it fresh; to make it something special. But those two scripts, more than any other, were just an immediate yes."

Carrey took on the role of Joel Barish, who alongside his partner decides to have his memories of the relationship erased after it goes downhill.

Carrey's easy yes to The Truman Show echoes the choice of many of his fans, particularly in recent years amid the coronavirus pandemic, with a reviewer calling the film 'the ultimate movie for escaping lockdown'.

However, while The Truman Show may have been ranked the highest overall, Carrey's 'funniest movie' was one which just passed its 25th anniversary and has been dubbed as showing Carrey at the peak of his physical comedy, Liar Liar.
