Joss Whedon has claimed Gal Gadot misunderstood him on Justice League because ‘English isn’t her first language’.

The Firefly creator has been the subject of controversy throughout his career, whether it’s his portrayal of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow in Avengers: Age of Ultron or his leaked Wonder Woman script.

However, the backlash escalated when Ray Fisher, who starred as Cyborg in both versions of Justice League, called Whedon out for ‘gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable’ behaviour, followed by Gadot’s account of him ‘threatening’ her on the set.

Whedon took over from Zack Snyder on the 2017 film after the director had to depart due to a family tragedy. His extensive, widely-derided changes to the movie – from its script to general aesthetic – made Justice League rather infamous and led to the Snyder Cut campaign.

In addition to Fisher’s claims and Jason Momoa, who plays Aquaman, saying the cast received ‘sh*tty’ treatment and that ‘serious stuff went down’, sources close to the production claimed Whedon was allegedly dismissive of Gadot’s concerns over her character. Whedon also reportedly said he’d never worked with a ‘ruder group of people’.

Gadot, who’s played Wonder Woman in five movies, ‘wanted to make the character flow from one movie to the next’, but Whedon wasn’t having any of it. ‘Joss was bragging that he’s had it out with Gal. He told her he’s the writer and she’s going to shut up and say the lines and he can make her look incredibly stupid in this movie,’ the source claimed.

The star then confirmed the allegations. ‘He threatened my career and told me that if I did something, he’ll make sure my career will be miserable and I just took care of it on the spot,’ she said. ‘I had my issues with [Whedon] and Warner Bros. handled it in a timely manner.’

Whedon recently spoke to NY Magazinewhere he brushed off Gadot’s claims and said he never threatened her at all. ‘I don’t threaten people. Who does that?’ he said.

‘English is not her first language, and I tend to be annoyingly flowery in my speech,’ he said of Gadot, who’s become one of the biggest movie stars in the world in the likes of Red Notice, the upcoming Death on the Nile and her take on Cleopatra.

Whedon also recalled a conversation in which he ‘joked’ she’d have to ‘tie him to a railroad track and [get rid of a scene] over his dead body… then I was told that I had said something about her dead body and tying her to the railroad track’.

The publication reached out to Gadot, who said, ‘I understood perfectly.’
