In the flashbacks we get to see Obi-Wan in a training duel with apprentice Anakin Skywalker, who will fall to the dark side and become iconic Star Wars villain Darth Vader.

The events of the duel mirror the conflict in the episode and provides fans a wonderful glimpse back into a bygone era, along with clearing up a mystery many have been wondering about for a long time.

Anakin's a bit of a whiner in the prequels and one of his biggest complaints is that Obi-Wan isn't letting him advance through the ranks of the Jedi as quickly as he wants to.

One of his furious rants about how he's ready to become a Jedi Knight makes more sense as we see Anakin gain the upper hand in his duel with his master, only for Obi-Wan to turn the tables on his apprentice and deliver an important lesson.

Kenobi tells his Padawan that he's blinded by a need for victory, praising Anakin as a 'great warrior' but warning him 'your need to prove yourself is your undoing'.

Delivering the final lesson, Obi-Wan says: "Until you overcome it, a Padwan you will still be."

This adds a crucial bit of context to Anakin's furious tirade, with the young Jedi getting a clear statement from his master that he's not ready to become a Jedi Knight.

Then again, Anakin's need to prove himself is something he never really seems to shed.

While Darth Vader quite literally wiped the floor with Obi-Wan in their battle in the third episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi, that floor being made of burning coals, the pair could be due another showdown in the final episode of the series.

The sixth and final episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi is due to release on Disney+ on 22 June.
