Stop the press: Netflix is remaking Roald Dahl classics Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG and more.
Christmas has come early with the news that these iconic films are getting a brand new home on Netflix.
The Roald Dahl Story Company and Netflix jointly announced today (November 27) that the provider will be extending the Roald Dahl universe with an exclusive new original animated event series.
You can take a look at what to expect below:
The series will of course be based on the classic books from the critically acclaimed and award-winning author.
As well as family favourites Willy Wonka and Matilda – and let’s not forget the Oompa-Loompas! – also included in the remake will be The Twits and many more beloved titles.
Roald Dahl’s widow, Felicity Dahl, said:
Our mission, which is purposefully lofty, is for as many children as possible around the world to experience the unique magic and positive message of Roald Dahl’s stories.
This partnership with Netflix marks a significant move toward making that possible and is an incredibly exciting new chapter for the Roald Dahl Story Company. Roald would, I know, be thrilled.
Roald Dahl stories have been a major part of children’s lives for as long as anyone can remember, but now, for the first time, Netflix will be able to extend these stories in a way which has never happened before.
By bringing together the highest quality creative, visual, and writing teams, they will be able to create a premium animated event series for audiences of all ages and for families to enjoy together.
Melissa Cobb, Vice President of Kids and Family Content at Netflix said:
Immersing ourselves in the extraordinary worlds of Roald Dahl stories has been an honour and a massive amount of fun, and we are grateful for the trust the Roald Dahl Story Company and the Dahl family have placed in our team to deliver more moments of shared joy to families around the world.
We have great creative ambition to reimagine the journeys of so many treasured Dahl characters in fresh, contemporary ways with the highest quality animation and production values.
Gideon Simeloff, Strategy Director for The Roald Dahl Story Company, added:
Netflix is known for innovative and high-quality storytelling. There is no other place in the world that can deliver animated entertainment for the whole family at such quality and scale.
The full list of titles in the agreement between Netflix and the Roald Dahl Story Company includes, as well as those already mentioned, Esio Trot, George’s Marvellous Medicine, and The Enormous Crocodile.
Also included are The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me, Billy and the Minpins, The Magic Finger, and Rhyme Stew. What more could you ask for?!
Pass me the popcorn because I personally can’t wait to relive my childhood and binge watch all my favourite characters.
Production is set to commence on the first of the Netflix Dahl animated series in 2019.
