Millie Bobby Brown was forced to overcome her biggest fear while filming new Netflix movie

The Stranger Things star told the director things would be 'intense' for her

Millie Bobby Brown has faced fictional monsters, criminals and villains in her various roles, but her latest project forced her to deal with a very real fear.

At just 20 years old, Brown has plenty of experience acting afraid.

The key word in that, however, is 'acting'. Once those cameras stop rolling, she can be assured that the Demogorgon, Godzilla or Kong can't hurt her.

The director said Millie admitted filming would be 'intense' for her.

The same can't be said for real phobias, which is what she had to face while working on her Netflix movie Damsel, which arrived on the streaming service this month.

If you've already seen the movie, you'll know that it flips traditional fairytales on their head as Brown's character, Elodie, is forced to save herself after her Prince Charming sacrifices her to a fire-breathing dragon.

Before you jump to any conclusions, I'm not suggesting that Brown has a phobia of dragons. Instead, she was forced to face her fear as Elodie attempted to escape the cave where the dragon lives.

You can check out the trailer for the film, which has been getting rave reviews for the look of its dragon and its 'satisfying' ending, below:

In an interview with Polygon, Damsel director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo explained: "Millie has claustrophobia."

Claustrophobia is a fear of confined spaces, like those Brown had to work in while creating the movie.

Fresnadillo explained how the creators worked with Brown to help her feel comfortable and overcome her fear while filming, saying: "So we had to have a lot of conversations in order to calm her down to make her feel that she would be protected and comfortable with the scene."

According to the director, Brown admitted it was 'going to be intense' for her, but she was 'happy to do it' for the sake of the film.

"So let’s make it but please make it in the quickest way," she added, according to Fresnadillo.

The director continued: "The intensity of the scene comes from the fact that she’s literally overcoming that fear. It was almost like therapy for her.”

Though filming scenes in the tight spaces was tough for Brown, her dedication appears to have paid off as viewers have been raving about Damsel online.

After watching the movie, one fan commented: "Damsel was freaking 10 out of 10!!!! Everything about it was just perfect and that ending?? Like I am blown away! Millie Bobby Brown ate that role UP! I deff recommend!"

Another commented: "Damsel was such a good movie! Millie Bobby Brown did an amazing job. totally recommend."

Damsel is available to stream on Netflix now.
