Netflix is releasing its most expensive movie of the year this month

Zack Snyder is behind the pricey movie which is set to arrive just in time for Christmas

Netflix has already brought us a whole host of good content this year, but the streaming service isn't done just yet as it's about to release its most expensive movie of 2023.

December is officially upon us, meaning there's just a few weeks separating us from 2024 and whatever new films and TV shows it might bring.

Netflix clearly wants to go out with a bang though, and it plans to do so with a whole host of new content dropping this month.

As well as new episodes of The Crown and the highly anticipated Chicken Run sequel, Dawn of the Nugget, Netflix is finally revealing an original movie that cost it more than any other title this year.

Just in time for Christmas, the streaming service is set to drop Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon; a movie so big that it's already been split into two parts.

The project has a budget of $166 million, according to estimates made by Vanity Fair, with the first part arriving on December 22.

Titled Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire, the first instalment focuses on a peaceful settlement located on the edge of a distant moon, which finds itself threatened by a tyrannical ruling force.

As the conflict comes to a head, 'a mysterious stranger living among its villagers becomes their best hope for survival', the synopsis explains.

The movie has come about after more than three decades of planning by Snyder, and while a lot of sci-fi movies rely largely on visual effects to help bring their worlds to life, the director also opted to use much of his budget to create practical sets in a Santa Clarita canyon just outside Los Angeles.

There, crews built a Scandinavian-style village complete with homes, shops and barns, a stone bridge and even an entire river.

The director also insisted there be real crops for farmers in the film to harvest - and that's only in one of the communities he created for the movie.

It's clear Snyder wanted to go all out for Rebel Moon, and fans will be able to see the result - or at least the first half of it - when it drops later this month.

There's currently no release date set for the second part of the film, but Snyder told Vanity Fair he doesn't want a long wait after the first instalment.

“It won’t be long after. Netflix can do things that a traditional studio can’t do as far as how close together the movies are released," he explained.
