New thriller becomes one of Netflix's most-watched movies of all time just weeks after release

A new thriller that has been on Netflix for a matter of weeks has become one of the most-watched movies on the streaming platform.

A new Netflix thriller has become one of the streaming services' most-watched movies of all time just weeks after its release.

With the amount of new releases and existing favorites on Netflix, it can be difficult to stand out from the crowd.

However, one particular thriller to have released at the start of this year has done just that.

The film Society of the Snow has captivated fans as it gives an eerier look into a 1972 Uruguayan rugby team plane crash that saw those onboard forced to resort to cannibalism to survive after being stranded on the Andes mountains.

While trying to survive in the snow, the team had to think smart in order to live, which included filling up bottles with snow and letting it melt to drinking water and raiding the onboard luggage for anything edible, such as candy and nuts.

However, things took a sinister turn after a week of surviving in the wilderness, and as supplies started to dwindle and the men became low on food, the thought of cannibalism began within the group.

The Netflix smash is based on true events.

As per a report by Digital Spy, Society of the Snow has racked up 12 million hours viewed and 51 million views as of 14 January.

This places it in tenth in Netflix's all-time top ten list of biggest non-English language films - a remarkable achievement considering the thriller has been out for less than a month.

Netflix's most-watched non-English language movie currently is Troll, with 178 million hours viewed and 103 million views.

In time, some are predicting that Society of the Snow could overtake Troll and claim top spot.

The new film has been met with praise from all sides of the internet, with it sitting at a 90 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Director J.A. Bayona also couldn’t help but share some of the praise he's been getting for the flick.

Sharing on his own X page he quoted a report from the L’Info Tout Court publication: “Society of the Snow can already boast of being one of the best films we will see this year. Juan Antonio Bayona proves once again that he is one of the best directors today, offering nothing less than one of the most memorable survival films of recent times, finally returning his credentials to an incredible true story, where the human condition and emotion come together to shake us to our core. Excellent."

Society of the Snow is streaming on Netflix now.
