'It's about someone who spots something weird going on in a nearby house and starts to spiral as they strive to find out the truth'.
If someone offered up this description of a title, it's possible that it could call to mind a number of different films. Perhaps Amy Adams' The Woman in the Window, Emily Blunt's The Girl on the Train, Shia LeBeouf's Disturbia or, likely the inspiration for them all, Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window.
In this instance, however, I'm actually talking about Netflix's new series, The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window.

Starring The Good Place's Kristen Bell, the series focuses on Anna, a woman who 'obsesses over a hunky neighbor across the street' and may or may not witness a murder, all while mixing 'wine, pills and casseroles'. Much like the other titles in the genre, the protagonist becomes obsessed with solving the potential crime – though unlike its predecessors, this particular version of the story doesn't take itself too seriously.
In case you couldn't guess from the unnecessarily long title, the series is a parody of other similar mysteries, with Anna taking on many of the characteristics of those who came before her. The series is currently trending on Netflix at Number 1 in the UK, despite it being a story that's already been told time and again, though viewers have revealed mixed opinions about this particular version.
One fan commented, 'It's a fun parody of the distressed white woman psychological thriller genre. Kristen Bell's great in it. Has some good twists and a WILD unpredictable finale. The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window is also super bingeable and shorter that it's [sic] title.'
Another wrote, 'the woman in the house across the street from the girl in the window is genuinely such a delightful show i’m having the time of my LIFE.'
However, while many have embraced the parody, others didn't quite seem to get the point, or in fact failed to recognise that it was designed to mock those that came before.
One Twitter user wrote, 'I’m only a couple eps in but The woman in the house across the street from the girl in the window is literally the film The woman in the window.'
Another commented, 'I don't get what The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window was meant to be. A "Dark Comedy" that only attempts humour rarely & whenever it does, fails miserably? I love Kristen Bell but this was ... lame.'
With the love/hate response to the series, Netflix users will have to decide for themselves whether the parody is a success.
