New Doctor Strange Clip Announces Illuminati And Adds Further Professor X Speculation (Alamy)

A new clip from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has confirmed that the Illuminati will appear in the upcoming blockbuster.

In a teaser posted on Marvel’s Twitter on Tuesday (26 April), Benedict Cumberbatch’s superhero is escorted by robots to a large chamber, when Karl Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) tells him: “The Illuminati will see you now.”

The preview has fuelled fresh speculation about Illuminati member Professor X’s (Patrick Stewart) role in the flick, almost two months after Stewart himself seemingly confirmed his involvement.

For any non-Marvelheads out there, it might be worth explaining exactly who the Illuminati are and why the organisation’s appearance has got fans so hot under the collar.

In the comics, the Illuminati is composed of the smartest heroes planet earth has to offer. Their job? To use those big, juicy brains of theirs to tackle multiversal threats and solve the sorts of problems where ‘Hulk smash’ simply won’t suffice.

Heavyweight telepath Professor X was a member of the very first Illuminati, and speaking in March Stewart all but confirmed he’ll be popping up in next month’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

All hell broke loose when Marvel dropped a new Multiverse of Madness trailer during the Super Bowl in February in which Professor X’s voice could be heard off-screen.

The moment unfolded when a shackled Strange was brought before the Illuminati and someone sounding a hell of a lot like Charles Xavier said: “You should tell him the truth.”

Speaking about the fan hysteria the trailer ignited, Stewart said, according to the Radio Times: “I had my phone turned off as it happened, so I didn't hear anything.

Patrick Stewart's Professor X Spotted In Doctor Strange 2 Trailer

published at4 months ago

“It wasn't until the next morning when I woke up and looked at my phone and found that I had been bombarded with responses.

“My PR people had sent me reactions that they had detailed and passed onto me. I actually didn't recognise my own voice. It sounded different. Whether I had a cold or something at the time, I don't know.”

He added: “I was astonished – and all they saw was the back of my shoulder and I think my earlobe, nothing else – that there would have been so many connections made. But it pleased me [to see the reactions]."

And it seems Tuesday’s trailer drop has once again enthralled Strange diehards, with many rushing to Twitter to express their glee, but our favourite tweet of all has to be: “I apologise in advance to everyone in that cinema screening who hears me scream when I see Professor X.”
