New Elvis Biopic Gets 12-Minute Standing Ovation At Cannes

Starring Austin Butler as the iconic King of Rock and Roll, Elvis shares the story of the star's rise to fame

The new biopic Elvis, directed by Baz Luhrmann, got an incredible 12-minute standing ovation at Cannes.

Starring Austin Butler as the iconic King of Rock and Roll, Elvis shares the story of the star's rise to fame and his complex relationship with manager Colonel Tom Parker, played by none other than Tom Hanks.

For months, people had been waiting for the film to drop, with fans going wild when the trailer was released earlier this month.

Check it out below:

After watching, many took to Twitter to note the uncanny resemblance between Butler and Elvis.

One user said: "I think Austin Butler is going to make history with this performance, Isn’t easy as an actor to carry the king of rock&roll on his shoulders."

Another quoted a moment from the trailer, saying: "When he said “It has everything to do with us” He sounded exactly like Elvis."

A third wrote: "Honestly, this is the first time I’ve felt that “movie magic” experience in a very long time and it’s just a trailer!"

And, it seems that movie magic was in the air at Cannes this week, with the film being met with a whopping 12-minute standing ovation - the longest of the film festival so far this year.

"A 12-minute standing ovation for #ElvisMovie at the #Cannes2022 Premiere. Don't miss Austin Butler and Tom Hanks in THE film of the summer, in cinemas June 24," the official Warner Bros. account wrote.

During the ovation, Butler and Luhrmann can be seen sharing a hug as the rest of the cast celebrate.

The film is set to be the blockbuster of the summer and if a 12-minute standing ovation wasn't enough to entice you to watch, maybe Hanks' bald head will.

Yep, our beloved Forrest Gump shaved his head for the role of the Colonel, telling Graham Norton about his experience.

"I am working on Baz Lurhmann's movie about Elvis Presley - Austin Butler is playing Elvis Presley."

"And here, let me show you the horrible haircut I have to have in order to portray Colonel Tom Parker."

Coming down into the frame to reveal his very bald head, Hanks quipped: "Check out this horrible ... Can you see that? Look at that thing!

"I just scared the children. I want to apologise for showing that."

Elvis will be in cinemas on 24 June.
