One of the most underrated horror films of all time is getting a sequel nine years on

The 2014 movie is finally getting a sequel

A 'must-see' horror movie from 2014 is getting a sequel nearly a decade after its release.

Most films typically get a sequel within a few years of it hitting cinemas (unless you're Toy Story 3, that is), but horror fans were beginning to lose hope that this film was ever going to get a follow-up.

However, you'll be pleased to know that It Follows its finally getting a well-deserved sequel, and it could be here sooner than you'd expect.

The synopsis for the 2014 horror film (which recently dropped on Netflix) reads: "After carefree teenager Jay (Maika Monroe) sleeps with her new boyfriend, Hugh (Jake Weary), for the first time, she learns that she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse that is passed from victim to victim via sexual intercourse.

"Death, Jay learns, will creep inexorably toward her as either a friend or a stranger. Jay's friends don't believe her seemingly paranoid ravings, until they too begin to see the phantom assassins and band together to help her flee or defend herself."

It Follows hit cinemas in 2014.

Its sequel is titled They Follow, and Monroe will reprise her role of Jay Height.

David Robert Mitchell is also returning to write and direct the movie.

Neon confirmed the news of the sequel on social media.

It penned to X (formerly Twitter): "It’s everywhere. THEY FOLLOW.

"The long-awaited sequel to the modern horror classic IT FOLLOWS from David Robert Mitchell.

"Coming soon."

While the original had a measly budget of just $1.3 million, it went on to be a fan favourite - with Dave Franco being one.

Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes back in 2020, Franco placed It Follows in his top five horror movies.

"It’s such a simple, brilliant concept, and it’s hard to believe that no one had ever done it before. It feels timeless. And the filmmaking is incredible," he said of the film.

"The lighting, the camera moves, the music, and the slightly heightened performances that feel like they belong in a throwback ’80s horror film.

"It just knows exactly what it is, and it somehow manages to feel nostalgic and extremely modern at the same time. I don’t know how David Robert Mitchell pulled that off."

Dave Franco described It Follows as 'timeless'.

He went on to say that the opening scene of It Follows 'really sets the tone for the whole film'.

Neon is looking to sell They Follows' distribution rights at this year's American Film Market.

With this in mind, Mitchell hopes to start shooting the sequel next year.

As it's still very early days, a release date hasn't been shared yet.
