Cinemagoer has awkward reaction after realizing new Mean Girls movie is a musical midway through

People are flooding to social media in debate after a cinemagoer revealed the audience's reaction to the new Mean Girls movie.

Sometimes it's great to go into a movie blind, not knowing at all what you're about to watch. And other times... Well, take Saltburn for an example - many of us went in believing it was going to be a comedy and to avoid spoilers let's just say we all regretted it if we ended up watching it with our parents.

And in the second instance of viewers not quite realizing what they were heading into, we have the 2024 remake of Mean Girls.

The Mean Girls remake came out on January 12 in the US and hoards of the OG's fans ran to the cinemas to see it.

The official synopsis reads: "From the comedic mind of Tina Fey comes a new twist on the modern classic, MEAN GIRLS. New student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called 'The Plastics,' ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and her minions Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika).

"However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney), she finds herself prey in Regina’s crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school."

However, one part of the small print some viewers forgot to read was the new movie is a musical - a musical note in the 'A' of the title a clue.

And one viewing's audience had a pretty extreme reaction when the penny finally dropped mid-watch.

A video posted to X - formerly known as Twitter - by someone in the audience shows the film playing in a cinema auditorium - naughty, naughty.

The clip captures the moment where the first song of the movie commences - 'Stupid with Love' - sung by Cady (Angourie Rice).

And the reaction of the members of the audience who hadn't realized the film was a musical up until that moment? Well, cue widespread laughter and many groans too. You can here it for yourself here:

The video has been viewed over 30 million times, with people flooding to the post to weigh in on the audience's reaction.

Some defended the film, arguing it never hid it was going to be a musical.

One X user said: "It was literally advertised as a musical."

A second wrote: "They literally advertised this as a musical."

A third commented: "What did they expect? How did they not know it's a musical?"

However, others simply argued it wasn't a good part of the movie to pop in a song.

One user argued: "Her singing was so unnecessary for this part ngl."

"That groan must've echoed the struggle we all feel," another added.

And the remaining just found the whole situation hilarious.

A final resolved: "It’s the collective groans for me."
