Unsolved killing featured on Netflix series leads FBI to reopen case and exhume woman's body

The case surrounding the unsolved killing of Joyce Maleck has reopened.

While Netflix is full of festive flicks and entertaining dramas, there is certainly some more serious stuff on the popular streaming platform.

One of those shows was released on Netflix back in 2017 and it's now sparked action from the authorities.

Joyce Malecki was last seen November 1969 at a mall in the suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland.

She was doing some Christmas shopping for her nearest and dearest, but she was never to be seen again.

A few days followed until the body of a 20-year-old was found on a nearby military base - it was concluded that she was strangled.

The show was released on Netflix in 2017.

Since then, the cause of Malecki's tragic death has remained a mystery, though efforts to find answers are about to ramp up.

That is because the FBI plans to reopen the case amid the popular 2017 series named The Keepers.

The series examined the slaying of Sister Cathy Cesnik - something that unfolded just days before Malecki's murder in very similar circumstances.

While never previously connected, people in recent years have questioned whether Malecki’s disappearance could be linked to that of Cesnik.

What makes the two cases eerily freaky is the fact Cesnik was also found dead after she never returned from Christmas shopping.

Now, the FBI is planning to exhume Malecki’s body in an attempt to find answers for her family.

An advocate for her family has since confirmed the exhumation was tentatively planned in a statement provided to the Associated Press.

Kurt Wolfgang, executive director of the Maryland Crime Victims Resource Center, said investigators are now planning to extract DNA from Malecki’s body.

Investigations will continue into the murder of Joyce Malecki.

However, he did state it is unclear what investigators are looking for and what they are trying to determine with this latest efforts.

Wolfgang has been working closely with the Malecki family in recent years.

He said: "They want justice out of this thing. Even though it was 54 years ago, it would certainly help them to know what happened."

Wolfgang went on to tell The Associated Press that the FBI shared little information with the family about developments in the case.

As per the Independent, a spokesperson for the FBI’s Baltimore Field Office declined to comment, though they did cite 'respect for the ongoing investigation'.
