People Hated Morbius So Much It's Coming Back To Cinemas

The Spider-Man spin-off received a less-than-positive reaction on its release in April, but some things are so bad that they are good

If you’ve been anywhere near the internet in recent months, you’ll have heard of the awful phenomenon that is Morbius

The Spider-Man spin-off received a less-than-positive reaction on its release in March, but some things are so bad they're good.

To put how badly the film was received into context, it snagged a score of just 17 percent on Rotten Tomatoes

Now, after the film became a viral meme - and even a meal in the case of Binley Mega Chippy - it’s being re-released in theatres.

"When?" we hear you ask. Morbius will be making its return to select cinemas from today (3 June), Comicbook reports.

Reacting to the news that the film would be returning, one Twitter user wrote: “The first movie ever to bomb TWICE. #Morbius”

A second added: “This is so funny because a key part of the Morbius memes is not actually seeing the movie.”

A third Twitter user joked: “The funniest Morbius meme of all is that Sony is gonna lose a tonne of money because they convinced themselves that memes mean someone is gonna watch it.”

Meanwhile, a fourth Twitter user speculated about the possibility of a sequel while referencing one of the most popular memes.

"Morbius 2 would be so incredible," they wrote. "Not because he would say, 'It's Morbin time'. But because Sony would think that him saying it would be so f**king hilarious, and that fact alone, makes it absolutely f**king hilarious. It would be like ultimate corporate lack of self awareness."

A fifth similarly joked about a reaction to a sequel.

Alongside a picture of the Krusty Krab from SpongeBob Squarepants exploding, they wrote: "The theatre when Morbius says, 'It’s Morbin time' during Morbius 2."

The film underperformed on its initial release, making a domestic total of $73 million (£58m) and a worldwide total of $163 million (£130m), with a reported budget of $75 million (£60m).

Morbius stars Jared Leto as Michael Morbius, an antihero suffering from a devastating blood disease.

He goes on a mission to cure himself, but with devastating consequences.

Leto told Comicbook of the character: "It's harder and harder to find a character that hasn't been portrayed before.

“And the fact that this character is coming to screens for the very first time April 1st, I'm incredibly excited about that.

“And the other thing that I loved is that you have this transformative performance inside of this big Marvel movie and that there were kind of three characters in one here, it was perfectly suited for me and what I'm interested in."
