Nicolas Cage's new outing as, well, himself, has been hailed by fans as so bad it's good after the new trailer dropped today.
From John Milton in Drive Angry to Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider, Cage has taken on a plethora of roles over his acting career. Now, The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent sees the star step into a character previously not seen on his acting resume: himself.
The upcoming action-comedy sees Cage as a cash-strapped version of himself, having decided to give up on acting completely. As the pressure piles on, debts mounting and morale waning, in this alternative version of our world, Cage lowers his standards to attend the party of mega-rich superfan Javi (Pedro Pascal) in exchange for $1 million.

Roped in by the prospect of cashing in on the less-than-desirable gig, Cage quickly realises things are most definitely too good to be true.
'Creatively unfulfilled and facing financial ruin, the fictionalized version of Cage must accept a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a dangerous superfan (Pedro Pascal). Things take a wildly unexpected turn when Cage is recruited by a CIA operative (Tiffany Haddish) and forced to live up to his own legend, channelling his most iconic and beloved on-screen characters in order to save himself and his loved ones,' the film's official synopsis reads.

Early reactions to the trailer appear to be largely positive, with many joking about once again being roped into the Cage-iverse. 'The idea that this won't be the best movie ever is inconceivable to me,' wrote one Twitter user, while a second said: 'Man, it looks like a load of dumb fun. Can’t wait!'
'I get sucked into the mad world of nic cage so easily... just when I vow never to watch another one of his movies after viewing willy's wonderland, I'm of course going to see this,' joked a third. Meanwhile, a fourth tweeted: 'Holy sh*t!!! This is an actual film that has actually been filmed....'
According to Collider, the flick boasts a star-studded cast, including the like of Sharon Horgan, Ike Barinholtz, Alessandra Mastronardi, Jacob Scipio, Lily Sheen, Neil Patrick Harris, and Tiffany Haddish, with Tom Gormican in the director's chair.
Cage himself is named as a producer on the film, but it seems he has no desire to watch back his handy work on the big screen, earlier revealing the film freaked him out.

'It’s just too much of a whacked-out trip for me to go to a movie theatre and watch me play [director] Tom Gormican’s highly-neurotic, anxiety-ridden version of me,' he told Collider last year. 'I won’t see it, but I do hope you enjoy it.'
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent hits cinemas on April 22.
