Razzies Rescind Bruce Willis Category And Award After Aphasia Diagnosis

The 67-year-old announced he was retiring from acting this week

The Razzies have rescinded the Bruce Willis category and his award following news of his aphasia diagnosis.

It was revealed this week that the actor had been diagnosed with the condition, which has impacted his cognitive abilities.

In a post to Instagram, the Die Hard star's daughter, Rumer, said her father was stepping away from acting as a result.

She said: "To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities.

"As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.

"This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support.

"We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him."

She added: "As Bruce always says, "Live it up” and together we plan to do just that."

According to the Mayo Clinic, aphasia is a condition that impact a person's ability to speak and understand language, both verbal and written.

The Razzies, which is held the day before the Oscars, is known for being a tongue-in-cheek take on the entertainment industry, mocking some of the more questionable performances and releases of the past year.

And this year, organisers created a category specifically for Bruce, called 'The Worst Performance by Bruce Willis in a 2021 Movie'.

It was set up in reference to the eight films the Hollywood icon had starred in over the past year, with Cosmic Sin taking home the prize.

And following news of the 67-year-old's diagnosis, the awards were criticised for standing by the decision to keep the category.

In a tweet, the Razzies said: "The Razzies are truly sorry for [Bruce Willis'] diagnosed condition. Perhaps this explains why he wanted to go out with a bang in 2021."

However, the founders, John Wilson and Mo Murphy, have now confirmed that the award has been rescinded.

In a statement per The Wrap, the pair said: "After much thought and consideration, the Razzies have made the decision to rescind the Razzie Award given to Bruce Willis, due to his recently disclosed diagnosis.

"If someone’s medical condition is a factor in their decision making and/or their performance, we acknowledge that it is not appropriate to give them a Razzie."

Since news of his diagnosis was announced, fans have shared messages of support with Bruce and his family.

One person said: All love, grateful for all his awesome films all these years , what a lucky man to have you all there to support him xx."

While another added: "Sending love to you, Bruce and your beautiful family."
