No Way Home and Shang Chi become the 11th and 12th Marvel films to be nominated for an Academy Award. All three of Marvel's previous Oscar wins came for Black Panther, which triumphed in the costume design, production design and original score categories in 2019, as well as becoming the first and so far only Marvel film to be nominated in the best picture category.

Since its release in December 2021 Spider-Man: No Way Home has been racing up the all-time box office charts, and is currently the 6th highest grossing film worldwide of all time.

Elsewhere, No Way Home stars Andrew Garfield and Benedict Cumberbatch both received nods for best actor, with each having previously received one nomination in the category.

Garfield was nominated for Tick, Tick...Boom! in which he plays Rent composer Jonathan Larson, while Cumberbatch is one of the favourites for this year's award for his starring role in The Power of the Dog, for which another Spider-Man alumnus, Kirsten Dunst, was also nominated in the best supporting actress category.

The Power of the Dog leads the way in the 2022 Oscar nominations, appearing in 12 categories, including best picture, best director and three of the four acting categories. Dune received 10 nominations, with Steven Spielberg's West Side Story and Kenneth Branagh's Belfast both receiving seven.

The 97th Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 27.
