The creators of Stranger Things have revealed the fifth and final series will involve a time jump into the future.
The popular Netflix series careered back on to our screens with the first half of the fourth series last month, bringing with it a brand-new monster in a world that just keeps on getting tipped upside down.
It came after a near three-year break caused by the coronavirus pandemic, which forced production on the fourth series to be shut down for months and delayed the conclusion of filming to September 2021.
Unfortunately, the ageing of the young cast members couldn't be delayed along with it, and as a result the teens are now four years older than they were in 2018 when they were filming series three, which is supposed to have taken place just one year before series four.
With filming on series five yet to begin, creators the Duffer Brothers have acknowledged they'll likely have to address the inevitable ageing that takes place.
In an interview with TV Line, co-creator Ross Duffer said: “I’m sure we will do a time jump. Ideally, we’d have shot [Seasons 4 and 5] back to back, but there was just no feasible way to do that. So these are all discussions we’re going to have with our writers when we start the room up.”
As it turns out, though, Ross revealed the creators are actually still working on the fourth series of the show, trying to finish the 'massive' final two episodes which will drop with the second half of the series on 1 July.

Matt Duffer told the publication the creators aren't yet ready to reveal a start date for shooting on the fifth series, but assured that in spite of the ongoing work on series four the last-ever episodes are 'pretty well mapped out'.
The creators are open to change, though, as Matt explained: "We learn a lot every time we make a [season]. We’ve learned a lot just working with all of our new actors and the ones that we’ve worked with for a long time over this year [making Season 4], so I’m sure it’ll change a little bit from that outline."
With fans across the globe having been captivated by Stranger Things since its initial release in 2016, Matt said the 'stressful' thing for creators is bringing the show to an end.
"The ending is the hard thing,” he said. “We really want to stick the landing.”
If what we've seen so far is anything to go by, the Duffer Brothers are sure to do a good job.
