It takes a hell of a lot of brains and courage to go head-to-head against Anne ‘The Governess’ Hegerty on The Chase.

The formidable brainiac is as sharp tongued as she is sharp minded, and many smart and determined individuals have crumbled under the weight of her encyclopedic general knowledge.

However, one plucky team on the ITV show have defeated this teacher-ish dragon in a spectacular final chase; gaining the highest ever win ever seen on the daytime telly show.

The victorious team – Gayna, Tim, Luca and Diane – played for and won a life-changing £100,000. The champs divided the prize between them, enjoying a £25,000 share each.

During the final round, the team had 21 steps on the board. They had nine opportunities to push back, and executed four. With The Governess at 14 steps, time ran out.

Gayna, played last and boldly opted for the higher offer of £86,000. However, the others were more cautious and stuck to ‘Cash Builder’ amounts of £7,000, £3,000 and £4,000 respectively.

A delighted Gayna later said she planned to use her share of the winnings to try out a ‘wing walk’ experience. Diane pledged to treat her family to a holiday while Tim planned to splash out on a motorhome.

Amusingly, medical student Luca declared he would pig out on two takeaways a week until graduation – and would even order one from fancy pants restaurant The Ritz.

Speaking just after the surprising win, host Bradley Walsh enthusiastically declared:

£100,000. The highest amount won on a daytime show, ever.

The Governess, 60, appeared impressed by her worthy opponents, commenting:

I hope The Ritz does do takeaways because you deserve it – you all do. Very, very well played.

I didn’t expect to win that one to be honest. Very good indeed.

The Governess was ranked 55th in the World Quizzing Championships as of 2014, and is the second highest ranked woman. Beating her is no easy feat, and winning her approval is even harder still.

After her humbling defeat, The Governess told the Radio Times:

Any time you’re up against a full house, you’re always at a disadvantage – they have a four-step head start and there are four of them to help on the pushbacks, especially when it’s quite a diverse team.

She added:

21 steps is a great target, and they did well to push me back four times… One’s always disappointed to lose, but we love to test ourselves against high targets, and it does make for great TV!

Meanwhile, viewers took to social media to applaud these new quiz show legends.

One person gasped:

Wow… Just wow, what a team, proves that the chasers are humans.. best team I’ve ever seen, well deserved.

Another cheered:

Wow what a show, well done to all, especially Diane – you were fantastic!

This new win smashes the record held since 2015, where a brainiac team managed to thrash Chaser Shaun ‘The Barrister’ Wallace, taking home £90,000 between them.

Well done to these quizzing superstars. And to think I once got excited by winning a bottle of plonk at a pub quiz!
