Viewers have been left stunned by a sex scene in The Time Traveller's Wife.

The classic Audrey Niffenegger novel has been adapted in a new HBO series, which retells the 'spellbinding and intricately out-of-order love story'.

But one love scene in particular has stood out as being especially out-of-order.

In the flashback scene, main man Henry uses his time travelling skills to go back to when he's 16 and... well, do what most 16-year-old boys try to do at some point.

In case I'm not clear - autofellatio. And in case that's not clear - noshing himself off.

People have been taking to Twitter to share their shock at the scene.

One person wrote: "I owned and read The Time Traveller's Wife for many years and the way I courageously blocked out any memory of this scene."

Another said: "The Time Traveller's Wife is truly wild. Just straight up jumping from an incredibly depressing scene to 'Of course I time travelled to suck myself off, wouldn't you?'"

Writing for Decider, Meghan O'Keefe said: "Young Henry DeTamble (Brian Altemus) used his time travelling power not to go back in time and kill baby Hitler, but to suck himself off.

"I can't quite put my finger on why the scene is so disturbing, but it will haunt me for the rest of my goddamn life."

Not everyone found the scene off-putting, though.

If it's piqued your interest, here's the synopsis of the series: "The Time Traveller's Wife follows the spellbinding and intricately out-of-order love story between Clare (Rose Leslie, Game of Thrones), and Henry (Theo James, Divergent), and a marriage with a problem: time travel.

"At 6 years old, Clare meets Henry, the future love of her life – and who, as a time traveller, is actually visiting from the future.

"Fourteen years later, when a beautiful redhead wanders into the library where Henry works claiming not only to have known him all her life but to be his future wife, a magical romance ensues that is as sprawling and complicated as Henry's attempts to explain his 'condition'.

"Over six hour-long episodes, the genre-bending drama series expertly weaves themes of love, loss, marriage, and survival – in a story that defies the laws and logic of time."
