Tom Cruise Rumoured To Star As Iron Man In Doctor Strange 2
This is what I call a cameo-rich environment: Tom Cruise is rumoured to appear as Iron Man in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Ever since Spider-Man: No Way Home hit cinemas and became one of the best moments in our cinemagoing lives, attention has started to pivot to next outing for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Sorcerer Supreme; more specifically, who will appear across the titular multiverse.
The MCU has played havoc with time, space and reality over the past year: WandaVision sets up the Scarlet Witch’s ‘destiny to destroy the world’ with forbidden magic; Loki broke the timeline, resulting in several more spiralling out of control; and No Way Home nearly broke the multiverse wide open.
The first teaser for Doctor Strange 2 hones in on the fallout of eponymous sorcerer’s decisions with Spider-Man, with Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) himself being seen as the ‘greatest threat to our universe’ – it’s almost definitely the Strange variant from What If…? at the end of the trailer.
Shooting recently wrapped on reshoots, rumoured to be ordered to include more cameos following No Way Home‘s nostalgic success. A number of appearances have been speculated – none of which have been confirmed, to be clear – including Tom Cruise’s Tony Stark.
Cruise had been offered the role before Robert Downey Jr., as the latter of whom was considered a huge risk at the time. However, he earlier said he didn’t feel ‘it was gonna work’, so he passed. His appearance in Doctor Strange 2 would likely be brief fan service, rather than preceding any larger commitments to the MCU.
He’d be one of many, many cameos, if every rumour is to be believed. I’m going to list a few of them now, but I’d stress that they should be taken with a large pinch of salt.
Following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox’s catalogue of superheroes, fans have been anticipating the introduction of X-Men, the Fantastic Four and other characters.
Well, Doctor Strange 2 may include cameos from the likes of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Michael Fassbender and Ian McKellen’s Magneto, not to mention Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and maybe even Ioan Gruffudd’s Mr Fantastic. Unsurprisingly, the cast of 2015’s Fantastic Four are not expected to appear.
Rumours have also emerged of John Krasinski appearing as Reed Richards, aka Mr Fantastic, as per The Illuminerdi. The Office star has been fan-cast as the hero for years, alongside wife and fellow actor Emily Blunt as Sue Storm.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit cinemas on May 4, 2022.
