Top Gun: Maverick Just Broke Yet Another Record

The film has been a massive hit globally and is now Tom Cruise's most successful movie at the box office.

Top Gun: Maverick has surpassed yet another box office record since hitting cinema screens last month.

Over the weekend, Tom Cruise’s latest blockbuster cracked the $1 billion (£812 million) mark across the global box office, Forbes has reported, making it the actor’s most successful film of all time.

Not only that, but the sequel to 1986's Top Gun has become the first movie of 2022 to reach the milestone after just 31 days in cinemas.

Top Gun: Maverick’s astounding ticket sales mean it has also knocked Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($943 million) off the highest-grossing movie of the year at the global box office, an impressive feat following the pandemic.

The only other film to hit such numbers since the coronavirus was Marvel's superhero film Spider-Man: No Way Home, which garnered more than $1.89 billion (£1.53 million) at the global box office.

Prior to the sequel, Cruise’s film most successfully film in the box office was Mission: Impossible - Fallout, which earned him a whopping $791.1 million (£647 million).

Though impressive, the record is not entirely unsurprising after Maverick achieved the highest-grossing opening weekend of Cruise's career with an incredible $100 million (£81 million).

Top Gun: Maverick sees the fighter pilot return to the training school to prepare a group of younger pilots for, ironically, a mission which seems near impossible.

The actor admitted there was a lot of pressure on creating the sequel, which came more than 30 years after the release of the original film, as he told The Independent that taking on the project was a 'daunting task'.

“Fans all over the world – more than any other film for decades have been saying please do another one, and I was like – I don’t know how to do that," he said.

Cruise went on to say he would 'go home and think about how to approach it', so he expressed his relief the film had been a resounding success upon its release.

He continued: "To hear about how audiences feel about it I’m telling you I just feel, I’m so excited for them, I’m so happy about it, I’m relieved for them you know.”

Top Gun: Maverick could continue its hot streak for a long time to come as the film is still yet to open in Korea, where Cruise has a large following.
