There has been a lot of speculation over who will be taking over Daniel Craig as the next James Bond, and a major hint has just been dropped by the ‘favourite’.
We’ve heard rumours suggesting Tom Hiddleston was in the running, Poldark’s Aidan Turner, he’s been hotly tipped as well, but one name which has been cropping up time and time again is Idris Elba.
Can you imagine?
Broccoli is reported to have made these remarks while in conversation with director Antoine Fuqua, who believes this progressive move will happen ‘sooner rather than later’.
Idris could do it if he was in shape. You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that.
Rumours of Elba playing James Bond started way back in 2014, when emails between high profile Sony Pictures executives were leaked by hackers.
The then co-chair of Sony, Amy Pascal, reportedly told a colleague she believed ‘Idris should be the next Bond’.
In the past Elba’s has spoken out about his desire to play Bond, but over time he seemed to lose some of the enthusiasm for the role because he said people were politicising a ‘black Bond’ so much.
He told The Telegraph back in 2015:
It feels like I’m campaigning and I’m not. At first, it was harmless – oh, I know, wouldn’t it be great? – and now it’s started off racial debates.
I’m probably the most famous Bond actor in the world and I’ve not even played the role. Enough is enough. I can’t talk about it any more.
The Luther star distanced himself from the role earlier this year, saying he thinks it might be time for a woman to play James Bond telling Variety it’s time to ‘do something different’.
He told them:
Could be a woman – could be a black woman, could be a white woman – but I think, that character, everybody would like to see it have… do something different with it, why not?
Should Idris choose to take up the mantle of Bond he’ll have to wait his turn because Daniel Craig’s still expected to make one more outing as the iconic British spy.
However, this morning (August 12), Elba posted a tweet to his 2.5 million followers, which has catapulted him into the hot seat for the next Bond.
He posted an edited image of himself, with the caption: ‘My name’s Elba, Idris Elba.’
What could that mean?
Plenty of people were quick to ask him if he was trying to tell them something, and I think it’s safe to say if he were to be announced as the next Bond, it would go down very well.
One person wrote:
Don’t tease us like this, Idris!
If you’re the next Bond, it will be the first Bond film I ever see.
And somebody else replied: ‘Please be 007 dont tease us like this get that contract signed!’
Elba followed his cryptic tweet several hours later, posting:
Don’t believe the HYPE…
