Hey world, you guys know Robert Downey Jr right? You probably know him best as Iron Man AKA Tony Stark. Newsflash, he’s been in other movies too and it looks like he’s getting ready to return to one of his other iconic roles.

Yes, it looks like Downey is getting ready for a third outing as the world’s greatest detective (who isn’t Batman!). I am of course talking about Sherlock Holmes, a role which he has become synonymous with, just like the aforementioned Marvel superhero.

A third Sherlock Holmes film was confirmed earlier this year and Downey Jr has put his fans on alert that he is already practising his ‘Sherlock face’.

Check out the trailer for the last film Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows:

Plans for a third Sherlock film was confirmed this year and it was later given an official release date back in May. The last film, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, was released in 2011 and it looks as if the upcoming third film won’t be out till December 25, 2020, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

At least it gives Downey enough time to get reacquainted with the role of Baker Street’s famous fictional resident. It seems like he’s been using the time productively (when he’s not busy getting his metal arse kicked by Thanos) after posting a Tweet over the weekend, August 19, informing his fans that he’s ‘Practicing my Sherlock face [sic]’.

Of course, any good Sherlock film wouldn’t be complete without his trusty sidekick Dr Watson. Downey will be reuniting with Jude Law who will reprise his role as the detective’s loyal, but long-suffering, friend and partner.

It will be interesting to see where the third film will take us, in the last film it was revealed the genius detective had faked his death after appearing to have met his demise alongside nemesis, Professor James Moriarty. Knowing Watson’s agony of having to deal with Holmes’ eccentric bull-crap I can’t imagine he’d be too happy when he eventually finds out the whole thing was an elaborate hoax.

The films are based on the books by Arthur Conan Doyle.

It has been suggested filming of the third instalment will begin late this year, according to comicbook.com. The script is being penned by Chris Brancato, whose impressive writing CV includes Narcos and Hannibal, with Ritchie expected to return to directing duties.

Downey and Law first teamed up with Ritchie on Sherlock Holmes in 2009. The film was both a box office and critical hit which earned $524 million (just over £411 million) worldwide. Downey won a Golden Globe Award for his performance, and the film was nominated for two Academy Awards.

The sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, followed three years later with the plot heavily influenced by Doyle’s classic Sherlock Holmes stories The Final Problem and The Empty House. While the film received a more mixed reception, it still went on to make $545 million (over £427 million) worldwide.

Prior to its confirmation, the third film had been in some form of planning since A Game of Shadows was released. The studio had switched screenwriters on numerous occasions and, for a while, it was unknown if Warner Bros. was still interested in a third film.
