McDonald’s McPlant Burger Aimed At ‘Flexitarians’ Launches TodayAlamy/McDonald's

McDonald’s fans will have the chance to sink their teeth into a brand-new, animal-free burger from today as the fast-food chain is releasing its first vegan burger at more than 250 stores.

Say the word ‘McDonald’s’ and most people will immediately jump to thoughts of the Big Mac or the chicken nugget sharebox, with plant-based eaters often being left to rely on items such as vegetable-filled wraps, fries and fruit bags to see them through until their next meal.

Though many might enjoy the vegan offerings already available, I’m sure there are a few foodies out there who would love to sink their teeth into a plant-based burger at McDonald’s, but who have so far been unable to do so.

That can change today with the release of the McPlant burger, which the restaurant says features an ‘impressive build including a delicious plant-based patty, bespoke vegan cheese and vegan sandwich sauce.’

The new burger was first trialled in 10 restaurants in Coventry starting September 29 and today, October 13, it will arrive in dozens more stores. McDonald’s plans to roll out the McPlant nationwide in 2022.

You don’t have to be a vegan or vegetarian to enjoy the new item, as McDonald’s has promised it ‘delivers the same great taste and experience you would expect from a McDonald’s burger’. The release comes after three years of research and development, with ‘every element of the McPlant was designed with taste and quality top-of-mind’.

The vegan burger is cooked separately from other McDonald’s burgers and sandwiches using dedicated utensils to avoid cross-contamination from the meat-based products.

Michelle Graham-Clare, Chief Marketing Officer of McDonald’s UK and Ireland, assured the restaurant has taken its time to meet the ‘highest standards’ and create something ‘that all our customers will enjoy.’

She added: ‘We are always looking for different ways to innovate and meet our customers’ needs, and with McPlant we have a delicious plant-based burger that will appeal to everyone. Whether you’re vegan or just fancy a plant-based patty, we’re confident you will enjoy the McPlant.’
