Following the news that we can expect mobile titles based on all of Blizzard’s IPs, a new report suggests that we can expect a Pokemon GO-style Warcraft game to be revealed soon.
Kotaku recently published an excellent investigative report on the “past, present, and future of Diablo“, which really digs into – among other things – development on Diablo 4, and the fan backlash against Diablo Immortal.
It’s a great piece, and it also contains one interesting reference to the potential future of Warcraft on mobile.
A source at Blizzard told Kotaku:
The reaction inside the company to Immortal is very different than the reaction outside the company. Part of the thinking on a lot of these is, people want to work on smaller projects. Smaller projects in mobile tend to make sense.
As it turns out, Pokemon GO is a very popular game amongst a number of Blizzard employees. As a result, a Blizzard “incubation team” has apparently been assembled to work on a Warcraft title in the vein of Pokemon GO.
I can only imagine how the reaction to that announcement is gonna go down among diehard fans of the Warcraft franchise.
The majority of “hardcore” gamers have always seemed reluctant to accept mobile gaming into their lives, but given that a game like Pokemon GO can make $104 million per month, we might have to get used to companies looking at how they can bring established IPs to mobile.
For now, Diablo 4 is still very much on people’s minds. Blizzard has confirmed that the company are still working on many, as yet unannounced Diablo projects, but stopped short of confirming anything else.
