There are certain franchises that are just begging to be turned into expansive open world RPGs, and Harry Potter is absolutely one of them.
JK Rowling’s wizarding world is a rich, beautifully realised creation – both on screen and on the page. It’s packed with enough characters, spells, monsters, and danger to pack a AAA fantasy game with content.
Brilliantly, it looks like gamers are finally getting their wish, as footage of a brand new open world Harry Potter RPG has apparently leaked online.
Footage and information on the title have come from Reddit user VapeThisBro, who claims to have been part of a focus test group for the Harry Potter title.
Before we go any further, I do need to point out that you should have a hefty pinch of salt on hand. These reports are completely unconfirmed, and the claims of a stranger on the internet are obviously often shaky, at best.
With that said, the footage does look legit, and it certainly sounds like a real Harry Potter RPG. You can take a look at the leaked footage below and make up your own mind.
Warner Bros opened a new label in 2017 specifically to publish Harry Potter titles, so the concept of a AAA game certainly isn’t totally out of the blue. Some have even speculated that this is the secret project being worked on by Rocksteady – the studio behind the excellent Batman: Arkham games.
However, some people are suggesting that the project is the work of Avalanche Studios, who are best known for Disney Infinity, and were purchased by Warner Bros back in 2017.
VapeThisBro claims that the game is set in the 19th century, and stars a a character with unique abilities who has gained late acceptance into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
They also mention that the game’s open world, comprised of familiar and brand new locations as you embark on a quest to uncover the truth behind a series of strange occurrences at the school.
There’s also talk of eight different “Wizarding classes”, the ability to choose your own house, a new magic system, character creation, and a branching story based on your actions.
Basically it’s an RPG with Harry Potter characters in it then, and that sounds amazing to me. If this does turn out to be true, we can expect to find out more very soon.
