It’s looking like the physical edition of Red Dead Redemption 2 could come on two discs, according to Japanese packaging for the game that has appeared online.

The leaked packaging shows the PS4 edition of the open world Western, so we’re not sure if this rumoured two disc deal would also pertain to the more powerful Xbox One, but it seems likely.

On the game’s back cover, you can see a two disc symbol (below):

Double disc games certainly represent something of a throwback to an older generation – the biggest example I can remember from my youth is Final Fantasy VII. Typically a game would arrive on two discs because the games were just two big for the storage capacity of optical discs.

Meanwhile, the PS4 uses dual layer Blu-Ray discs, which can hold a maximum of 50GB of data. Given we know Red Dead Redemption 2 has a meaty size of 105GB, this could explain Rockstar’s decision.

If that is indeed the case, then we can probably assume the physical version will feature two discs on Xbox One as well. We should also note that the Xbox 360 version of GTA V came on two discs, so Rockstar isn’t a stranger to this practice.

Meanwhile, if you’ve preordered Red Dead Redemption 2, you can start preloading the game this Friday (October 19). That’s probably a good idea if you plan on playing it by the time the game launches on October 26.
