Shadow Of War Plot And Gameplay Details Revealed

It’s been a few years since the excellent Shadow of Mordor left us hanging on an infuriating cliffhanger, but all our questions are set to be answered in Shadow of War

It was always obvious that the Lord of the Rings video game spinoff was gonna get a sequel sooner or later. Part Arkham, part Far Cry, set in a sandbox world where we could fuck with Uruk-hai till the Nazgul came home, Shadow of Mordor was too damn good to not get a follow up.

Check out the first trailer below, if you haven’t already – it’s a doozy.

So what can we look forward to in Middle Earth: Shadow of War? For a start, the expansion of the terrific Nemesis System, a unique feature that made the world and enemies of Shadow of Mordor feel genuinely alive.

It’s not clear in what way this system has been improved, but a press release promises that the ‘robust personalization from the first game is now applied to the entire world’.

Thrillingly, we’re told environments and characters are all shaped by player actions and decisions, and that every player will have a unique experience with the game.

David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment said:

Monolith Productions continues to innovate by introducing deeper, more personalised gameplay experiences, coupled with authentic storytelling. Middle-earth: Shadow of War truly drives the genre forward by taking the Nemesis System to new heights and allowing players to create their own personal journey within Middle-earth .

Michael de Plater, Vice President, Creative, Monolith Productions added:

Following the amazing reception to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, we massively expanded every dimension of the game, including the world, the story, the RPG systems, the core gameplay and of course the personal player stories of the Nemesis System. As lifelong fans of Middle-earth, we are so grateful to have the privilege to bring to life the most incredible fantasy world ever created in a new way, for a new generation. With Middle-earth: Shadow of War, we can’t wait to see the amazing stories players are going to create and share.

All in all then, Shadow of War sounds bigger, better, and more ambitious than its predecessor, and that’s not a bad thing at all. Throw in the fact that Sauron, a Balrog, Wraiths, and Nazgul all showed up in the trailer, and we have every LoTR fans’ wet dream.

Shadow of War comes to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on August 25, 2017.
